Types of Massage Available at Care Chiropractic in Marion Iowa:

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is a relaxing, full body technique utilizing an array of strokes, including rolling, kneading and percussion. Lotion or oil is used, and strokes are performed in a continuous rhythm towards the heart. This technique flushes the muscle tissue, removing toxins, improving circulation and reducing tension.
Swedish Massage, also known as a circulatory massage, can increase circulation up to 3 times the normal resting rate. Because of this effect, it’s important to disclose any heart conditions or medications to your therapist to avoid any potential adverse effects.
Pressure can vary from light to deep depending on the clients preference. Most effective in 60 or 90 minute sessions, however the routine can be abbreviated to 20 or 40 minutes if necessary.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue massage utilizes slower strokes and more pressure into deeper layers of the muscle than Swedish massage. The intention of this technique is to realign deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue by breaking up scar tissue and other restrictive adhesions. Deep Tissue massage is more rehabilitative than relaxing. Though deeper pressure is required to be effective, the pressure is still adjusted to stay within the “optimal therapy zone” for each individual client.
Due to the focus on rehabilitation of a specific area, this technique is most effective in shorter, more frequent sessions in the beginning. Combined sessions of Swedish and Deep Tissue will simultaneously break up adhesions while realigning and flushing muscle tissue offering the best of both worlds. Optimal in sessions of 40 or 60 minutes.

Sports Massage

Sports Massage is beneficial to athletes of all levels, from professional to recreational. In contrast to Swedish and Deep Tissue massage, Sports Massage isn’t a specific technique, but a combination of techniques drawn from multiple areas. The four primary types are described below. Arrangements can be made with Jesse for both in-office and on-site treatment.
• Pre-Event-a short, 15-20 minute massage performed prior to an event to stimulate the muscles and ready them for action. Performed within an hour of the competition, on-site and the athlete remains fully clothed.
• Post-Event-a short, 15-20 minute massage performed immediately following an event with the goal of decreasing tension, flushing out lactic acid and reducing inflammation. Performed on-site with the athlete remaining fully clothed.
• Restorative-performed on-site or in the therapist’s office with session length tailored to the clients needs. Sessions occur at regular intervals during the athletes active training period to allow the athlete to train harder with less injury.
• Rehabilitative-performed on-site or in the therapist’s office with session lengths tailored to the clients needs. Performed post injury, treatment is geared towards alleviating pain, improving range of motion and restoring the body to pre-injury condition.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release is a form of soft tissue therapy used to treat chronic pain by freeing fascial restrictions and adhesions, allowing the tissue to return to it’s natural, 3-dimensional position within the body. The technique requires both friction and control, thus the area to be treated should be clean, dry and free of lotions or oils. Myofascial Release can be achieved one of two ways; direct or indirect.
• Direct Release utilizes pressure directly into the restrictive barrier of affected tissue. A highly effective form of Direct Release, Trigger Point Therapy, utilizes sustained pressure applied by the therapist’s finger to deactivate a myofascial trigger point. A myofascial trigger point is a hyperirritable nodule within a taut band of muscle tissue affecting not only the muscle that contains it, but other areas of referred pain through nerve pathways. Identifying and deactivating trigger points is a time consuming process and usually reserved for conditions that have not responded to other techniques. Requires sessions of 40+ minutes.
• Indirect Release utilizes only a few grams of pressure in the direction of a fascial restriction for several minutes, allowing the bodies natural physiological process to relax and stretch the fascia. Jesse has been trained in the John F. Barnes form of indirect myofascial release, a highly effective technique requiring superior palpation skills and the ability to recognize and respond to subtle signals transmitted through the soft tissue. Effective in sessions of 40, 60 and 90+ minutes.
